Program Objectives
CWC offers the ESL program in three separate courses. All classes focus on grammar, reading, writing and conversational skills.
All of our ESL classes are designed to help students feel comfortable using English at every level. The atmosphere of classes is relaxed, but at the same time, the curriculum is carefully structured. The teachers are friendly and helpful, but also knowledgeable and organized. Teachers guide the classes, but students have numerous and varied opportunities to practice what they learn through classroom speaking activities. Classes at Columbia West are meant to be fun and stimulating. We feel that if learning English is a chore, students will not be as motivated. Instead, we have created a dynamic curriculum that nurtures and challenges students to make great improvements in their English abilities.
Beginning English: Level 1 and Level 2
Level 1 is for students who have studied some English in their native countries but have little confidence or proficiency in actually using the language. The level is designed to help students begin to feel comfortable with English as a spoken language in the context of developing basic grammar skills and vocabulary. Level 2 builds on the basic grammar, listening, and speaking skills of Level 1, and begins to introduce idiomatic expressions and writing. Both classes offer a strong foundation for further study of English.
Intermediate English: Level 3 and Level 4
In levels 3 and 4 students study more complex grammatical structures. In Level 3, they practice applying grammatical rules, new vocabulary, and idioms in structured conversations. In Level 4, students build on what they have learned in Level 3, and begin to study the rudiments of college-level writing and listening skills, in preparation for advanced English.
Advanced English: Level 5 and Level 6
Advanced English classes at Columbia West are designed to prepare students to use English in academic and work environments. Both levels involve an intensive review of grammar, with an emphasis on how it is actually used in speaking and writing. Listening passages are longer and more complex, and conversations are more challenging. In Level 5, students are exposed to a wider range of idioms and vocabulary. Level 6 involves an intensive focus on strengthening writing skills.
At the completion of ESL Level 6, the student should be able to take the TOEFL for admission to a college or university.
TOEFL: iBT (internet Based Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The TOEFL is composed of four sections: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. This test preparation course is designed to familiarize students with each section of the TOEFL as they prepare for admission to a college or university. Instruction centers on teaching students the important strategies and techniques to master and do well in each section. Class materials are authentic TOEFL test questions that will help students become more familiar with the format of the test before they take it. Special importance is given to writing and speaking skills so that CWC (Columbia West College) students will compete successfully against other international students as they apply to a college or university. Test taking strategies and academic English make the difference for TOEFL, and CWC students achieve higher scores. Students will take practice tests regularly throughout the course to monitor their progress and improvement. You will see that your score IS improving.
GRE (Graduate Records Examination) CLASS
The GRE is composed of three sections: verbal, quantitative (math), and writing. This is an intensive 12-week course that provides practice for the verbal and writing sections.

The course develops these skills through textbook material that contains ONLY practice that has been used on REAL GRE tests that have been released by the Educational Testing Service (the company that makes the GRE tests).
